Activated Carbon Filter

Removes chlorine, odour, colour and organics for better-tasting, protected water

About this plant

Overview

An Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) adsorbs chlorine, organic compounds, colour and odour from water. It improves taste and smell, and is a standard pre-treatment stage that protects RO membranes and ion exchange resins from chlorine damage.

How it works

Water flows through a bed of granular activated carbon, whose porous surface adsorbs chlorine and organic molecules. When the carbon is saturated it is replaced or reactivated, and the bed is backwashed to keep the flow even.

Why choose it

Key Features

Chlorine and Odour Removal Better taste and smell.
Organics and Colour Reduction Cleaner-looking water.
Membrane Protection Stops chlorine reaching RO membranes.
Backwash Capable Keeps the bed clean and even.
Flexible Vessels MS (lined), FRP or SS.

Step by step

Treatment Process

  1. Pre-filtered water inlet Water usually passes through a sand filter first to protect the carbon bed.
  2. Adsorption Chlorine, colour and organic molecules stick to the carbon surface.
  3. Treated water outlet Dechlorinated, cleaner water moves on to the next stage.
  4. Backwash and replacement The bed is backwashed regularly, and carbon is replaced when exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is carbon filtration needed before RO?

Chlorine can damage RO membranes. A carbon filter removes it before the water reaches them.

How often does the carbon need replacing?

It depends on chlorine and organic levels and water use. Plan for a periodic change, which we schedule with you.

Does it remove bacteria or dissolved salts?

No. Carbon improves taste and removes chlorine and organics, but dissolved salts and microbes need RO, UV or other treatment.
