Pressure Sand Filter

First-stage filtration that removes suspended solids and turbidity

About this plant

Overview

A Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) removes suspended particles, silt and turbidity from raw water. It is widely used as pre-treatment ahead of RO, softener and other plants, and as a standalone filter for cooling, process and swimming pool water.

How it works

Water is pumped under pressure through a bed of graded sand and gravel in a closed vessel. Suspended particles are trapped in the bed, and the filter is cleaned periodically by backwashing, which reverses the flow to flush trapped dirt to drain.

Why choose it

Key Features

Effective Turbidity Removal Clearer, cleaner water.
Closed Pressure Vessel Works without a second pumping stage.
Graded Media Bed Designed for good dirt-holding capacity.
Easy Backwash Manual or automatic valve options.
Robust Construction MS (lined), FRP or SS vessels.

Step by step

Treatment Process

  1. Raw water inlet Water enters the vessel under pressure.
  2. Filtration through the bed Suspended solids are trapped as water passes down through sand and gravel.
  3. Filtered water outlet Clarified water leaves from the bottom of the vessel.
  4. Backwash and rinse Flow is reversed to flush trapped dirt, then the bed is rinsed and returned to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I backwash the filter?

When the pressure drop across the filter rises or on a set schedule. We configure this at commissioning.

Does a sand filter make water safe to drink?

No. It removes suspended solids but not dissolved contaminants or microbes. It is a first stage, usually followed by other treatment.

How long does the sand last?

With proper backwashing, filter media typically lasts several years before it needs topping up or replacing.
